Under the watchful eye of our Environmental Co-ordinator, Beth Bagshaw, Tufcot is constantly striving to improve our environmental impact.

Our most recent project has been to replace the roof lights in key areas of the factory.

We had noticed that the roof lights were old, leaking and made the building very dark.

In fact, during summer no light would shine through, meaning the lights would need to be on all day.

Additionally, after years or wear and tear, the roof light had holes in them allowing heat to escape.

For these reasons, we decided to replace the lights in the Machine Shop as well as the Store & Maintenance Area.

This was a large project that has taken over a year to plan and execute.

Benefits of Our New Roof Lights

  • Improving Health & Wellbeing – Thanks to the added exposure to natural sunlight, employees feel better in themselves, especially going into the winter months when people come to work in the dark and go home in the dark. Individuals have commented saying their mood feels better due to the factory having more natural light.

  • Saving Energy – The roof panels being clear allows natural light to shine through, reducing the need for artificial lighting. We are already seeing a reduction in our electricity usage.

  • Reducing Wastage – We have vastly reduced the amount of heat escaping through the roof.

  • Saving Money – We have reduced our energy usage meaning we have saved money too. This is especially important given the current cost-of-living crisis.

  • Reducing Our Environmental Impact – Through the more carefully managed use of energy, we have successfully reduced our environmental impact.

Projects For 2023

We have a number of other environmental projects scheduled in for 2023 including:

  • Insulation – Evaluate and improve the roof and wall insulation throughout the factory

  • Double/Triple Glazing – Replace the older windows in the factory with double/triple glazing

  • Old Lighting – Replace the last of the old fluorescent lighting in the packing area

  • Solar – We are continuously looking into solar and large-scale projects

  • Manufacturing Processes – We will continue to improve our manufacturing processes to reduce energy consumption
