Over the last two years, Tufcot has worked hard to achieve a number of marine industry approvals for our most popular composite material, Tufcot® T100 Marine.

We are proud to have achieved approvals with these marine classification societies…

  • Lloyds Register

  • DNV

  • Bureau Veritas

  • ABS

  • RINA

These approvals cover a range of Tufcot® products including rudder bearings, propeller shaft bearings and stern tube bearings.

Since achieving our approvals, we have seen a large increase in business within the marine sector and are being approached with new opportunities more than ever before.

Tufcot® T100 Marine

Our Tufcot® T100 Marine material has been specifically formulated for the marine environment.

It is ideally suited to the operating conditions and working environment of the marine sector and is the perfect solution for marine applications including rudder and water-lubricated stern tube bearings.

One of the main benefits is that Tufcot® T100 Marine has minimal swell as well as low wear thanks to its inherent low friction.

In the marine and offshore worlds, the material can be run dry or use water as a lubricant, removing the need for oil or grease and helping to protect our environment.

The Importance of Approvals in the Marine Industry

Dating back to 1764, marine classification societies were designed to create benchmarks and guideline standards to assess the materials and parts applied to vessels, ships and aiding equipment.

With over 50 different classification societies existing today, they approve plans, examine parts and test materials to verify their structural strength, durability and suitability for application within the marine industry.

For Tufcot, approvals have been a critical element to our growing success and without them our parts wouldn’t be eligible for supply to many of our marine customers.

The Process of Being Approved

The process of class approval can vary from each society.

The assessments points include:

  • Presenting Technical Information – This will include technical specifications, design principals along with application and mechanical testing results.

  • Product Wear Tests – This requires an in-house setup which replicates how the part would be used in a real life, industry application. An external assessor will come in and assess the rig, setup and wear on the part after testing. This is mostly carried out for large parts such as rudders and propeller shafts.

  • Site Audit – An audit of the site and relevant paperwork is then carried out. This assesses our processes relating to quality assurance and capturing errors.

The Benefits to Our Customers

Our approvals provide a diverse range of benefits to our marine customers including:

  • Quality Assurance & Credibility – Class approvals are widely recognised and ensure that all materials and finished parts are fit for purpose. Our customers can trust that our materials have been industry approved and are safe to use.

  • Regulatory Compliance– Many vessels and ships are built to a standard class meaning that only approved parts can be used to build and maintain this ship.

  • Increased Safety – Approvals regulate safety standards and help to identify any potential issues.

  • Marketing Opportunities – Our customers also benefit from the ability to use our approvals to their advantage when marketing to their clients.

  • Efficient Operations – Regular inspections ensure that parts are maintained increasing asset lifespan as well as minimising machine downtime.
